About the Czech-Moravian Carnival Union

History, goals and mission of the union connecting carnival traditions since 2017.

Our history

In Milevsko, where there is a more than 150-year tradition of organizing carnival masquerade processions, a museum was opened in 2017 that seeks to document the depth of the local tradition and inspire its successors. On this occasion, the idea arose whether this museum could be the headquarters of a nationwide union of organizations that organize carnival and masquerade celebrations.

The goals of the carnival union stem primarily from the need to promote various forms of carnival traditions, customs and celebrations, not only externally but also among those who actively participate. Currently, there are dozens of carnival associations in the Czech Republic that often don't even know about each other. The union should help improve this situation.

Our goals

We want the union to be open to small associations, with a friendly atmosphere. Our goal is not to defend just one form of masks, but to help develop as many forms of carnival customs as possible, both traditional and modern.

We recognize the key role of traditional Czech carnival, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Masks in our country have many faces and the union supports this diversity.

How to become a member
